Know how many electrons are in the first three orbits- 2, 8,8
Metals-metals are shiny, hard, ductile, malleable, good conductors, and magnetic
Alloys-2 or more metals mixed together
Nonmetals-exact opposite of metals
Metalloids-have characteristics of both metals and nonmetals

Alkali Metals- one valence electron and is located in group 1
Alkaline earth metals- two valence electrons and located in group 2
Transition elements-groups 3-12
Lanthanides and Actinides- bottom elements
Carbon Family-row 14, 4 valence electrons
Nitrogen Family-row 15,5 valence electrons
Oxygen Family-row 16, 6 valence electrons
Halogen Family-row 17, 7 valence electrons

Noble Gases-row 18, full outer shell of electrons
